Резьба по плодовым косточкам является традиционным видом прикладного искусства в Китае. С 18-19 веков сохранились образцы резьбы по абрикосовым и персиковым косточкам, в последнее время получила широкое распространение резьба по оливковым косточкам (плоды вида канариум).

Семена растений вида Canarium достигают размера 50-60 мм в длину и 30 мм в диаметре, с толщиной стенок 10-15 мм, средний размер 30-35 мм.

Кость семян твёрдая, обладает достаточной плотностью для мелкой резьбы. По фактуре материал идентичен органической кости (кость, зубы и бивни животных), но легче обычной кости.
